Frequently Asked Questions
Gallup Survey
Engagement refers to the emotional connection employees feel to their jobs. It goes beyond job satisfaction to reflect how invested and aligned employees feel in the success of their teams and the organization
This survey is open to all full-time faculty and staff hired on or before October 1, 2022.
The results from this survey will help us understand the needs of its employees, what we are doing well, and where there are opportunities to improve the work environment.
Taking this survey will allow you to share anonymous feedback about your work experience at NJIT: if you feel valued, if you feel your contributions matter, and the level of pride in your work. The collective results will then be interpreted by leadership and managers to create action plans to enhance what works well and address opportunities to improve.
The Gallup Organization will conduct the survey for NJIT. They’ve been around for more than 70 years and are known as a trusted and independent research organization around the world, Gallup’s principle business involves research-based consulting for workplace leadership, marketing and customer practices.
Yes. Gallup administers NJIT’s employee engagement survey according to strict policies. Gallup does not share data with NJIT or any other client in a way that would directly connect you to your responses.
On November 7th, you will receive an invitation from "support@mail.gallup.com" with a unique website address and survey link to participate in the survey. The survey is accessible online 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is also mobile compatible. You have until November 18th to complete it.
Yes. Completing the survey is very important and each employee will have time to complete it.
There are 12 questions that should take less than 5 minutes to complete the survey.
Interpret each item based on what it means to you. What the item means to you depends on your role in your organization and what is important to you.
No. This survey is significantly shorter with only 12 items and entirely focused on employee engagement. In comparison, the Best Places to Work survey had over 70 items and covered 8 core focus areas: Leadership & Planning, Culture & Communications, Role Satisfaction, Work Environment, Relationship with Supervisor, Training/Development/Resources, Pay and Benefits, and Overall Engagement. We will administer the Best Places to Work survey again in May, 2023.

No. All personal responses to this survey will be kept completely anonymous. Gallup will collect, report, and analyze the data. At no point during this will anyone at NJIT, including senior leaders and managers, be privy to the origins of specific feedback. All results will be grouped at the team level.
Managers will receive a scorecard in which all individual responses will be aggregated into group averages and percentages, as long as there are four or more responses to a given item. The manager will see the average score of each question, not individual scores. If there are fewer than four respondents, that team’s survey results will not be reported, it will roll into the next higher level/team with five or more responses.
No. Gallup’s experience has shown that when there are four respondents in a group, it is very difficult to figure out one person’s answers. That’s why they only report the results at the workgroup level if there are at least four people in the group. If there are not four, it is reported at the next higher level. If there are four, but three or less respond, the results aren't shared with the manager and are reported at the next higher level.
NJIT sends Gallup the employee roster, which is also referred to as the organizational map. The organizational map defines all relationships within an organization that are vital to managing an institution. The organizational map consists of several sections: employee list, manager list, roll-up (reporting) structure, special team definitions, and a report list. It is a critical foundational tool Gallup uses to:
- Understand how our university is organized,
- Identify where action will occur at the local level, and
- Guide the creation of relevant, actionable data reporting.
Action planning is the phase of the engagement cycle in which departments at NJIT can have the greatest impact. It is a collaborative process that follows the distribution of engagement survey results. Schools, divisions and departments use their survey results to guide conversations about engagement and their work environment, then create simple action plans to guide changes.
